Effects of Industrial Modularization on Discontinuous Innovation:an Empirical Analysis in Automobile Industry

Abstract: This paper aims to examine the interaction between industrial modularity and discontinuous innovation in automobile industry. Two indicators for measuring discontinuous innovation and industrial modularity are designed respectively. Then the patent data in global automobile industry from 1972 to 2011 are collected to explore the causal relations empirically between them through the Granger causality tests. It is found that there exists a long-term dynamic equilibrium between discontinuous innovation and industrial modularity. The results of Granger causality show that the causal relationship between discontinuous innovation and industrial modularization is significant, and industrial modularization has positive effects on discontinuous innovation and its long-term effects are more significant than short-term effects.

摘要: 为探讨产业模块化与不连续创新之间的相互作用关系,分别构建了产业模块化指数与不连续创新指数的测度指标,基于全球汽车产业1972~2011年的专利数据,主要利用格兰杰因果检验方法就产业模块化对不连续创新的影响及其因果方向进行了实证分析。结果表明,产业模块化对不连续创新存在显著正向影响且长期影响较为显著。
